Student Spotlight: Wondem Dessalegne

Wondem Dessalegne is a man with a passion; a passion to reach people with the Gospel of Christ. Born in Ethiopia, Wondem now makes his home in the Northwest where he works at Bellevue Christian School. Instead of taking restful vacations to relax and rejuvenate from his busy schedule, Wondem uses his vacation time a little differently than most: he goes on evangelistic tours of his home country where he has had the opportunity to preach, teach, disciple and plant Christian churches in a country that is becoming increasingly open to Islamic influence.

In his last trip to Africa, God used him to rescue a child who had literally been thrown away by his parents, a practice that happens all too frequently in certain parts of Ethiopia. His newly adopted son, Yabe Sera (meaning, "God's work") now has a permanent home as he lives with Wondem's sister and receives ongoing financial support from Wondem.

In addition to his heart for evangelism and church planting, Wondem's next dream is for God to use him to build a medical clinic in the city of Bale Goba. This clinic would be a resource for this impoverished area, serve as a beacon of hope to those with physical ailments, and also provide yet another avenue to reach people with the life-changing Gospel message. A new mission (Evangelical Africa Mission Outreach) is being established to facilitate Wondem's work in Ethiopia and the surrounding countries.

Because of his ongoing ministry to the Ethiopian people and his tenacious spirit, Wondem Dessalegne is the imago Dei institute's Student of the Year. His practical application of the truths he learns in the iDi classroom should be an encouragement to all of us.

If any of you would like to know how best to pray and support Wondem in his work, please don't hesitate to email us here at the college.
